Cash Providers Flourishing Along with Financial Crisis
Saturday, 20 December, 2008
According to informed sources, the financial crisis has lead to rise in illegal door to door cash providers who charge very high interest rates.
The loan shark approach people in working class neighborhood and offer the attractive quick cash loans.
However, unexpected high rate of interest are charged to the loan repayments and people often face the threat of violence if they get into arrears.
Sinead Butler of the Irish League of Credit Unions said they have recently notice to increase in reports detailing the actions of illegal door to door cash provider. “These people are immoral and approach blameless people with the guarantee of easy and quick loans,” stated Ms Butler. It all appears trouble free, without filling forms or anything like that and than people are tempted.
But our suggestion is: beware that type of cash providers and wait for honest provider which clears your all views.
“A free finance added Ms Butler. The fact that personal loans are cheaper in credit union is just demonstrated and the unique credit union additional benefit of loan protection insurance at no additional cost is highlighted. But it’s not only illegal cash providers that people need to be worry of in the run up to Christmas.
“Some of the licensed cash providers charge very high rate of interest,” stated Mr. Culloty. The cash being lent is often unsecured to people with poor credit history and this would be the reason behind the high rate of interest being charged.
Unlikely, a lot of people find themselves in a position where they feel they have no option but to turn to cash providers, he added. A lot of people don’t save with the credit union and don’t have to access credit union account, so the guarantee of a quick cash loan can prove very tempting, but our suggestion is to think twice before going this action. Our helpline has received over 10,000 calls in its first year of existence and we’ve seen a 30 % increase in people using our services.
Meanwhile, the Financial Regulator’s office has drawn up a new code by which licensed moneylenders must conform. The code is the result of years of reports and consultation with various agencies and it insists that loans made must be ‘suitable’ for a consumer.
However, Senator Brendan Ryan, Labour’s spokesperson on Consumer Affairs, said this does not apply if a customer approaches the cash providers, and there is no commitment to check income or outgoings when this is the case.
“In terms of the suitability of a loan, first of all there must be some capacity to repayment of loans and that’s obviously linked to a regular income person and there must be some evidence of that.”
